Adam Waldmann

Having been selected by Serious for Edition VII their groundbreaking initiative Take Five, saxophonist/composer and 2011 MOBO Award Winner, Adam Waldmann joins the ranks of previous esteemed participants including Gwilym Simcock, Soweto Kinch, Seb Rochford, Kit Downes and Jules Buckley.

Graduating from Trinity College of music in 2006, (receiving the award for ‘Outstanding Student’ from the Jazz Faculty), Adam received expert tutelage from British master saxophonists Julian Argüelles and Mark Lockheart as well studying under fine Dutch sax men Russell Van Den Berg and Yuri Honing. The latter during a 6 month exchange period in the Netherlands as a participant on the ‘New York comes to Groningen’ program at the Noord Netherlands Conservatorium. During these months he also got to study and play with the likes of David Berkman, Don Braden and Ralph Peterson whilst performing in the band of award winning Dutch pianist, Anne-Guus Teerhuis. He has performed with the likes of Alicia Keys, Mark Ronson, Paloma Faith, Boy George, Beth Ditto, Tinie Tempah, beatbox sensation Shlomo with Polar Bear (at the QEH as part of the ’Music Through Unconventional Means’ series) , The Sam Crowe Group, The Emilia Martensson Band, Will Vinson, Jim Hart, Jules Buckley and Dutch band FinnSilver amongst numerous others.

But it was with the self-released, 2010 debut album ‘Kairos Moment’ that Adam started make waves as a leader with his band Kairos 4tet. 'Kairos Moment' was met with considerable critical acclaim and the band picked up rave reviews for both their debut album and live shows, not to mention extensive radio play throughout Europe and worldwide. This led to Waldmann being described as "a powerful new voice in British Jazz" by the BBC, "a young master in the making" by Time Out and a "precociously talented composer and player" by AllAboutJazz.com. Despite comparisons to some of his musical idols including Wayne Shorter, Charles Lloyd and former teacher Julian Arguelles, Waldmann's unique voice and approach on his instrument make him "one of the most distinctive saxophonists in the UK" according to the Manchester Evening News.

2011 was a big year for Adam and Kairos 4tet. As well as winning the MOBO Award for 'Best Jazz Act', their album 'Statement of Intent' made it to #2 in MOJO Magazine's Albums of the Year' and #14 in Jazzwise's 'Albums of the Year'.
